Ethiopians traditional clothes are exotic and made with culture-based cloth that represents the nation’s sense of pride and dignity.
The cloth came from the old ancient culture of Ethiopia. These traditional clothes are mainly made of cotton that is woven together in long strips and then sewn together to make cloth.
As there are more than 70 ethnics in Ethiopia, the traditional clothes also differ accordingly.
Most people in Ethiopia wear the traditional cloth called ‘yehager libs’ on different occasions (church, holidays, etc). On some cloth shiny threads are used to decorate it and make it more stylish. On the bottom of the skirt there can be a lot of patterns.
If we talk about yehager libs, the traditional cloth is different for men and women. The men wear pants and a shirt all the way to the knee with a well-designed sweater and a piece of cloth on top.
The color of the collar is mainly white. Women wear dresses with a piece of cloth on top. It is called ‘netela.’
Most women prefer the white one but other colors can also be used in the bottom, which gives it a unique look. Together with the traditional cloth, the women wear necklaces and also bracelets on their arms and feet. The bracelets are made from silver and gold.
In the countryside, especially in the northern part of the country, ‘yehager libs’ is worn every day but not in the cities and towns, with the exception of some old people who would like to keep their tradition.
In the cities many wear western clothes but on special occasions, like holiday time for example, traditional clothes are worn. This includes New Years, Christmas, and weddings.
